Bed, Home & Beyond

It was a dark and stormy night.  A co-worker and I needed shelter from the storm as we wandered the dark alleyways of Chelsea.  An associate of ours had given us a crudely drawn map, which doubled as an invitation to what he described as an oasis in the heart of this urban desert.  “The warm smell of colitas” wafted through the night air as we spotted the velvet rope signaling our journeys end…or perhaps the beginning.  As we climbed the stairs, I was thinking to myself, “this could be heaven or this could be hell.”  Imagine a sophisticated bordello-esque, red, white and black atmosphere w/ plush couches, crystal chandeliers and tifted, leather-lined ceilings.  Home on West 27th street is warm, sexy and decadent.  The space offers all the luxuries of a premiere nightclub including 30 private tables, music by top DJs and VIP memberships.  After two hours of sheer swank, my publisher and I ran for the door, “trying to find the passage back to the place we were before.”  The nightman told us to relax and check out the place next door.

So we proceeded next door to journey even deeper into the bowels of luxurious decadence.  An elevator the size of my Westside apartment carried the two of us and a flock of fashionistas, young enough to be our daughters, up several flights of stairs.  I expected to see Al Pacino from Devil’s Advocate waiting for us with a black-toothed grin.  But when the doors opened, we realized we were the lucky holders of two tickets to paradise.  If Home, although quite as cozy as its name, reminded me of the eighth  level of Dante’s Inferno, BED conjured images of Catholic Heaven crossed with some Athenian by way of  Mt. Olympus deity’s bed chamber. Located in a bi-level penthouse at 530 West 27th Street, BED New York is the first downtown restaurant to combine two dining floors with a 360-degree rooftop view of the sweeping midtown skyline. BED measures more than 15,000 square feet and can hold up to 620 guests. The design and concept fuses seductive Miami sophistication with modern NYC style.
